In many ways, music is one of the most powerful elements of human culture. It can be a window into different traditions, values, and experience. I have picked four musical pieces from different cultures around the world for this playlist. These choices cross continents and musical traditions, showing a variety of many sounds that reflect the important history and modern growth of each culture. Each piece, in its own way, shows that music has played a big part in shaping identity and society-from ancient rituals to the latest innovator. Here are the four types of music I picked, and I hope you learn a lot from my blog. Gagaku is Japan's ancient court music, with a recorded history that goes over 1,000 years, and it shows one of the most amazing examples of respect for tradition and history. It is performed at ceremonies, religious events, and royal performance. Unlike most musical forms, that developed very fast or disappeared out of fashion, Gagaku keeps in touch with Japan...

Music and Rituals Music can serve as a very important way of connecting with each other and creating the atmosphere of an event. I haven’t had a lot of experience with rituals, but I have been to one recently. Almost two months ago on September 11 th , 2024, my uncle passed away. This was the first big death that I have had in my family. Many of the songs played provided comfort and reminded us of our spiritual beliefs. The song “wind beneath my wings” by Bette Midler played as I was sitting with my family. The lyrics of this song carried a deep appreciation for someone who has been a guiding force, comparing their support to the wind that allows a bird to fly. This metaphor underlines the idea that the person being honored has played a crucial role in the singer’s successes and happiness. This song really explained the role that my uncle played in my family and who he was as a person. Instead of making everyone cry more it triggered the good memories that we had of him. This son...

Music and Family I have shared many musical experiences with my family and friends during my life. Family and music go hand in hand in creating a person’s personal taste in music and culture. I believe that my family’s taste in music influenced my preferences on music from the enjoyment we shared while listening to different genres of music together. From my early childhood experiences through my teenage years, I have learned to explore and make social connections from the music I listened to growing up. During this blog I will explore an important member of my family’s relationship with music. I will explore their journey with music and ask questions about their personal musical influences and upbringings. The important family member that I interviewed and included in this blog is my mother. My mom and I have always listened to music together whether we were cleaning the house or going on a ride to the grocery store. My mom’s name is Harmony, and she is ...

Music and Gender September 21, 2024 Throughout history and even in my own experiences there have always been societal stereotypes in musical preferences of different genders. Most of society believes that young girls only want to listen to popular boy bands and pop, while males are more acceptable to listen to country and rap music. I have dealt with this firsthand, because I have had a friend who only listened to boy bads. She told me that the genres of music I listened too were not feminine enough. Of course, I do not mind listening to boy bands occasionally, but that is not my favorite, nor would I want to listen to just that all the time. I have also seen this happen with boys liking pop music which is mostly expected for just women to listen to. There are also ways that music can have different gender standers when it comes to playing instruments. I have noticed just by listening to music and when doing research that women are usually expected to play instruments like the ...

Music and Me August 4/24 Hello everybody. My name is Norah Greer, and I am a freshman at converse university. Although this is my first music class I love listening to music, and I am interested to learn more about music. I currently play on the Converse women's soccer team. I have played soccer for the ENCL CESA team for almost 10 years. I am from Union South Carolina, which is only thirty minutes away from the converse campus, so I am quite familiar with the Spartanburg area. I have never lived anywhere else but in Union South Carolina, so I plan on moving out of the state after college. At home I live with my dad, mom, and my brother. I also have a dog who is a 15-year-old chihuahua named Rex. Since I started college, I have started to listen to more music while studying and doing homework. I have started listening to music that is more in the pop genre. I really have never listened to this type of music but over the past month this is a playlist that I like to li...
